A temporary exhibition of the World War One memorial plaques in the Museum’s collection, along with the stories of their recipients.
The Museum is honoured to present a poignant tribute to the soldiers of the British Empire who made the ultimate sacrifice during the First World War. This special temporary exhibition brings to light World War One Memorial Plaques from our collection—each one a powerful testament to an individual life lost between 1914 and 1918. Known as “Dead Man’s Pennies,” these plaques were given to the soldiers’ next of kin, keeping their memory alive in the hearts of loved ones.
Plaques from the Museum’s reserve collection will be on display, along with the stories of the men they commemorate. These personal narratives allow us to remember them not as names on a plaque, but as sons, brothers, fathers, and friends.
Join us in honoring their memory, reflecting on their sacrifice, and sharing in the timeless act of remembrance so that their stories live on.
If you are unable to attend the exhibition, or would like to peruse the stories of these soldiers at your leisure, you can also view the exhibition online.
