How you can help

The Royal Green Jackets (Rifles) Museum is a charity and very dependent on the support of individuals, companies, trusts and public bodies to sustain a programme of continuous improvement of the Museum and its collections.

There are a number of ways in which you can help us.

  • By volunteering to spend some of your time working with us
  • By donating money to the Museum
  • By becoming a Friend of the Museum
  • By gifting items to the Museum collection
  • By gifting unwanted items to the Museum for sale
  • By leaving a legacy to the Museum in your Will

Volunteering

Volunteering to work for the Museum can be hugely educational and rewarding. It offers the chance to meet and mix with others, and need not be demanding.

Volunteers may spend as little or as much time working for the Museum as they wish – from a few hours a month to five days a week.

Opportunities for volunteers:

  • To work in the archives as a researcher and/or look after the archives and library
  • To document and care for the Museum’s objects, especially the silver collection
  • To be a Museum attendant, welcoming visitors and acting as a guide

If you have other skills which you think may be of use to the Museum – for example, marketing, design, library, textile conservation, IT – please do not hesitate to tell us.

Volunteers are not paid, although there are opportunities to take on part-time paid work as a museum attendant at weekends and bank holidays. Volunteers wishing to claim expenses to/from home may do so at a mileage rate of 45p per mile up to a limit of £40 per return journey. Extra expenses incurred in fulfilling the role and tasks of the post-holder at work will be fully reimbursed.

To offer your services as a volunteer or find out more, please e-mail the Curator or telephone 01962 828549.

Gifting items for sale

The Museum is always pleased to receive appropriate items for the Museum collection. This includes objects, medals, documents, photographs, books, clothing and material with a connection to The Royal Green Jackets and its antecedent, associated and affiliated regiments.

If you have a likely item or items of interest to the Museum, or think you may have, and would be happy to give the item(s) to the Museum, please e-mail the Curator or telephone 01962 828549.

Gifting unwanted items for sale

The Museum welcomes receiving from former members of the Regiment and/or their relatives any unwanted items of regimental or military property, dress, accoutrements, books etc, for which you or your relatives have no further use. Nearly all items, whatever their condition and if not required by the Museum, can be sold – on the donor’s instructions and with their permission – and the money used to benefit the Museum.

If you have any such items, please be sure to e-mail the Curator or telephone 01962 828549.

Depending upon the location of such items, it may be possible to arrange collection.
